In William Shakesphere’s play, he uses metaphor to communicate his idea about fate. But what is a metaphor? A metaphor is a figure of speech that identifies something being something unrelated for example ” more is up” in romeo an juliet shakespare used the as a metaphor. Here is the part of the speech that romeo says ” But soft, what light through yonder window breaks ? It is the east, and juliet is the sun. First of all the sun arises from the east and sets at the west. people believe that the sun is a traditional symbol of power and new life. This means romeo was the comparision of her as a new day. It’s also means that’she is beatiful and powerful this is because the sun is beatiful and powerful when it’s rises up for the day. In more detail yonder means ” at some distance in the direction indicated” so when romeo said “what light at some distance windows breaks” the window is the direction. Here is a quote from James geary that explains what a metaphor is ” A metaphor is kind of magical changing rooms where one thing for a moment, becomes another, and in that moment is seen in a whole new way forever”. Another example of fate that happned in romeo and juliet was when the servant asked romeo to read one of invitation, because the servant couldn’t read the invitation. When romeo knew about the invitation he knew that Rosaline was going to that party. The reason he knew because the party was a capulet party and Rosaline was part of the Cappulet’s. But who is Rosaline? Rosaline was the girl that Romeo liked but she never liked him back and in in the first act he was crying and thinking about her and could never stop talking about her. This is one example of fate because God has set the servant to go to Romeo and to tell him to read him the invitation, this led to Romeo finding Juliet. Another example of fate is when Mercutio died, when Romeo tried to stop Mercutio and Tybalt from fighting. But suddenly, out of know where Tybalt stabbed Mecutio and ran. Mecutio slowly died of blood loss. The reason i agree that this event is linked to fate is because this allows Romeo to get revenge on Tybalt for killing his friend , this also led to the death off Tyblat and the banishment of Romeo. When Romeo got banished this also led up to the death of Romeo and Juliet. The reason i think that the banishment part is linked with fate is because if Romeo never go banished he would be in Verona happily meeting with Juliet secretly, this also led up to the the plan that friar Lawrence said to Juliet about the poison. Friar Lawerence thought if Juliet drank the potion and Romeo knew about it , Romeo could get Juliet and go to Mantua together. But the message that Frair Lawerence hoped for to be delivered but wasn’t due to a disease outbreak the mail man couldn’t go to romeo’s house for this cause there is a consequence which is romeo not getting the letter. It is like what Issac newton every action has a reaction in other words the action is something you do and the reaction is the consequence . Another role in fate is when Romeo says ” He that hath steerage of my course, direct my sail” Romeo is talking about God thats why he has a He with capital letter . The meaning behind this line is that romeo was saying to God to guide him through his life. Romeo is letting God control his life and not letting himself do the decisions. Romeo also describes himself as a ship and God is the captain of the ship which which is himself. Additionally, one example of fate is the wedding of paris and juliet, the reason i agree that the marriage of paris and juliet is rt of fate is becaue if there was no wedding there will not be disaster at the end because juliet wont need to worry about the wedding that paris was planning , therefore she wouldn’t of have gone to friar Lawerence to ask for help. Futhermore Friar lawrence wouldnt give the potion if juliet never came to him. This wouldn’t of led the daeth of romeo and juliet if juliet never went to friar lawerence and that paris was not planing to get married with juliet. As seen in the film juliet goes to the church and interupts friar lawrence and paris and juliet goes to talk with friar lawrence about her confesions thats what paris thinks but in realife she went crying to friar lawrence and threatend to kill herself . Just that one tiny event that can turn into a big event one example of this is world war 1 and 2 , all of these battles just from an assination that caused word war 1 and from one person which his name is Adolf hitler caused world war 2. To conitue with my point about fate i have another example of fate in Romeo and Juliet and that is the potion itself the reason i believe that the potion is part of fate is because with our the potion there wouldn’t be any sleeping juliet or tricking romeo that juliet is dead not even the letter wouldn’t exist, adding on what i said there wouldn’t be any plague and not the meeting at the church with juliet an friar Lawrence. On the other hand some people might say the potion is not a part of fate and also she could off kill herself at the church or at her bedroom with a dagger, but in reality the potion is part of fate. As illustrated by William Shakespeare you can find fate every where in romeo and juliet such as at the end God planed in the future when romeo and juliet died that both families made friends and stoped the war. At the end romeos and juliet familes both made statues of juliet and juliet which sadly died. The capulet’s made a statue about juliet and the montague’s made a statue of romeo. This also a link to fate because when both families builds each others statue that brought peace to both families. like at the begging when the introduction beggins its says two crossed lovers take there lives, but brings peace to there families and happiness. Another example is when romeo escapes mecutio and benvolio to see juliet at the montagues house, the reason i agree that this is part of fate is becuase if he never went to see juliet , he would never see her again in the balcony saying.
when juliet she didn’t want to be a capulet , she wanted to be a monatgue to be with romeo the rest of her life. She also says to forget about his father and change his name to a capulet , she said after that swear that you love me and then i will change my name to montague. Another example is when juliet fakes her death, juliet fakes her death by drinking the potion that frair lawerence gave her, so then she drank it saying if the potion didn’t work she will stabb her self with a dagger, so she put a dagger under her pillow and then drank the potion.
The next moring…….
The nurse found juliet dead. Another example is when romeo said i defy you stars this means that Romeo is separting the path that God wanted romeo to go, but romeo made his own desicions , he also turned his back on God. Romeo wont listen to God and wont obey him aswell. Thats going against the rule of the religion in the time of Romeo and Juliet which is Christianity, The reason that Romeo got angry with God is because fate led him to the “death of Juliet” thats what he thought. Another example is that Romeo says
” I fear, too early, for my mind misgive
Some consequence yet hanging in the stars
Shall bitterly begin his fearful date
With this night’s revels, and expire the term
Of a dispised life closed in my breast
By some vile forfeit of untimely death.” This means that some consequences of fate are hanging in the stars which is the future, it also means that Romeo is worried that he will be at the party early, and that this party will be part of something bad, which is correct the party is part of fate because that when Romeo found juliet and were tybalt got angry at Romeo that he wanted to fight him in the party. Tybalts father was there to stop tybalt from fighting him. This is where juliet ask her servant about romeo and she said that he is a montague. After Juliet got told that romeo was a Montague she said that she didnt want to be a capulet anymore and that romeo swears his love to her and change his name, from a capulet to a Montague. The comprassion of the book with the film is that the film shows romeo and juliet falling in the pool will the book says that juliet is standing out side her balcony, another example is that at the start when the introduction start, the reason i think that this is part of fate is beacuse the introduction explains whats going to happen in the future, its like in a recipe, you get the ingredients in bullet points then you have the steps. In the movie you havge a women in a tv explaining the paradox, thats the name of the introduction. But in the book you just see the writing .

Jeremy, I am very impressed with the detail and thoughtfulness of this essay. You have explored a wide range of examples of where Shakespeare has made direct or indirect references to fate, and each time you’ve supported this with detailed analysis, including quotations from the text.
